New Delhi. The Minister of State for the Union of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, said in a written response to questions raised by Lok Sabha today that the 2020-21 sugar season exports about 7 million metric tons (LMT) of sugar. From 59.60 LMT in the 2019-20 sugar season, an increase of 17.45%.
After converting 35 LMT of sugar into ethanol, the sugar production in the current sugar season from 2021-22 is expected to be approximately 308 LMT, while domestic demand is estimated to be 270 LMT. The government is pushing sugar mills to export surplus sugar and convert surplus sugar cane/sugar into ethanol to sell the excess sugar stocks available to sugar mills and improve its liquidity so that they can pay sugarcane dues to farmers in a timely manner. In the last sugar season of 2020-21, approximately 70 LMT of sugar was exported, of which approximately 22 LMT of sugar was converted to ethanol. mandi bhav
