Kapurthala. The Kapurthala administration has established a goal to acquire 8.20 lakh metric tonnes of paddy from 42 mandis this year.
With the procurement process for paddy commencing in the district’s mandis, government agencies have purchased 60 metric tonnes of paddy as of yesterday. Despite the destruction of paddy crops across more than 30,000 acres in Kapurthala, the administration indicated that last year’s yield would serve as the benchmark for this year’s purchasing target as well.
In light of extensive crop damage throughout Kapurthala this year, the total area affected by flooding, where crops have suffered damage, amounts to 39,300 acres, with 33,264 acres specifically under paddy. It is estimated that the paddy crop has been damaged across all 22,000 acres in the severely affected Sultanpur Lodhi, although officials noted that some farmland in the Nadala and Dhilwan blocks has shown signs of recovery. This year, paddy was sown over 1,17,000 hectares (2,89,113 acres) in Kapurthala, with 33,264 acres under paddy experiencing total or partial damage. Furthermore, of the 13,450 acres designated for paddy in Nadala and Dhilwan, 5,660 acres were categorized as having 25 to 75 percent crop damage, according to officials.
Additionally, there has been a slight increase in the area dedicated to paddy cultivation in Kapurthala, rising from 1,16,600 hectares last year to 1,17,000 hectares this year. The paddy yield target for Kapurthala last year was also approximately 8.20 lakh metric tonnes.
