India becomes world’s largest rice producer

New Delhi: Amid concerns about a weak monsoon and growing climate risks, the government unveiled a nationwide contingency plan ahead of the critical kharif sowing season. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Thursday that India has surpassed China to become the world’s largest producer of rice.
According to the agriculture ministry’s third advance projections, rice output is expected to reach a record 154.02 mt in the 2025–2026 crop year, up from 150.18 mt the previous year.
The government is getting ready for possible El Nino-related weather disruptions.
