New Delhi.Due to worries about decreased domestic production, India’s imports of pulses increased significantly between April and July of FY27. Due to high global prices and supply interruptions, trade sources anticipate a moderation in imports in the upcoming months.
Between April and July of FY27, imports of pulses increased by 62% to 1.7 million tons (MT).
Imports increased 32% to $0.97 billion in value.
Concerns about a drop in domestic production as a result of the El Niño danger led to higher imports.
In the upcoming months, imports may decline as long as prices are high worldwide.
India’s imports of pulses increased significantly in the first four months of the current fiscal year as traders increased their buying abroad due to worries about domestic production.
The study states that from April to July of FY27, imports of pulses increased 62% year over year to 1.7 million tons. During that time, imports rose 32% in value to $0.97 billion.
Concerns about a potential drop in domestic production because of the El Niño danger were cited by trade sources as the cause of the increase. Higher imports were underpinned by robust demand from India, even though earlier world prices were comparatively muted.
However, given the recent dramatic rise in the price of important pulses, such as lentils and yellow peas from Canada, traders anticipate a slowdown in the rate of imports over the next months.
Due to logistical problems arising from the conflict with Ukraine, supplies from Russia have also been disrupted. The possibilities for the kharif and rabi crops will determine import volumes in the upcoming months, according to Satish Upadhyay, secretary of the India Pulses and Grains Association, who spoke to the journal.
Masur (lentil) imports, one of the main contributors to the overall rise, increased 227% year over year to 0.57 MT between April and July. Yellow pea imports increased 91% to 0.52 MT.
In the meantime, during the first four months of FY27, tur imports rose 7% to 0.31 MT. Urad imports, on the other hand, fell 20% to 0.18 MT in the same time frame.
