Private traders said the retail price of tomatoes in the Indian capital on Saturday soared to 80-85 rupees per kilogram due to tight supply in the producing areas.
Since June, tomato prices have been strong, and until recent weeks they have been in the range of 50-60 rupees per kilogram, depending on the variety.
Traders said that prices have soared suddenly this week due to reports of reduced new crop harvests in major producing areas. On Saturday, in unorganized markets, vegetable vendors and vendors offered tomatoes at 80-85 rupees per kilogram, depending on the quality and residential area. But government data shows that the average retail price of tomatoes in Delhi is 60 rupees/kg. PTI
