Aurangabad, The National Federation of Co-operative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) has started looking to hire harvesters from outside Maharashtra to cut excess sugarcane in Marathwada, an official said on Thursday.
Talking to PTI, NFCSF president Jayprakash Dandegavkar said nearly 60 lakh tonnes of sugarcane stands in the fields of Marathwada and the federation has initiated different steps to harvest the crop and get it to factories.
“Farm labourers are unable to work much in the fields due to extreme heat during the day. Hence, we are looking for harvesters to finish cutting the standing crops. As a part of this, we have approached the stakeholders in Karnataka and Gujarat, Dandegavkar said.
However, the cutting season is yet to end in these neighbouring states, he said.
The sugarcane cutting season, which generally ends by March, has prolonged this year due to excess production. PTI
